Mother dearest,
I have not written to you for a long time; I hoped that Manyasha would come and tell me about you but her journey is constantly being postponed. It would be a good thing if she could come in the second half of October (New Style) and we could take a trip to Italy together. I am thinking of taking a week’s holiday when I have finished my work (it is now drawing to a close).[1] On October 11 I shall be in Brussels for three days and shall return here afterwards and might think of a trip to Italy.[2] Why should not Mitya come here, too? He ought to take a rest after all his work with the sick. Of course, you must invite him, too—we could go for some splendid walks together. If there are money difficulties, you must take the money Anya has in the bank. I hope I shall now earn a lot.
It would be fine if we could take a trip to the Italian lakes. They say it is excellent there in the late autumn. Anyuta will probably come and stay with you soon, so you can send Manyasha and Mitya.
I embrace you fondly, my dear, and wish you good health.
What is autumn in the country like? Here it is not bad. The summer has been rotten, but now there are occasionally some real summer days.
