Transcriberâs note: This message of solidarity with the people of the Dominican Republic appeared in Avante! [Onward!], organ of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP, for its Portuguese initials). It is possible that the proposal to draft this document was a result of talks between the Italian and Portuguese Communist Party delegations that met at the 1965 gathering in Brussels.[1]
The representatives of 19 Communist Parties[2] from the capitalist countries in Europe gathered at a Conference in Brussels
- Salute the heroic efforts of the Dominican people in the fight to safeguard their essential democratic liberties and respect for the independence of their country.
- Condemn the unacceptable interference of the United States and its bloody military intervention aimed at imposing a [U.S.-backed] puppet government.
- Reject the OAS (Organization of American States) and its involvement in Dominican internal affairs.
- Proclaim our full solidarity with the people of the Dominican Republic to help ensure the free expression of the popular will and free functioning of the countryâs institutions.
Brussels, 3 June 1965
