Marx had a conversation with a New York Herald correspondent on July 20, 1871, and this newspaper printed on August 3 a deliberately falsified report (see also Marx’s letter to Friedrich Bolte of August 25, 1871).
Marx send a protest letter to the New York Herald on August 17, 1871, which was not published.
The french newspaper Le Gaulois printed extracts from the New York Herald article on August 22.
